The Ancient Order of Saint Gabriel is the more distinguished of the two levels of the Military Order of Saint Gabriel.
The Ancient Order is reserved for those rare individuals whose careers embody outstanding achievements and accomplishments in the spirit, dignity, and sense of sacrifice and commitment epitomized by a career that so singularly distinguishes the individual as a contributor to Public Affairs that they have few peers.
INDUCTION REQUIREMENTS
All Public Affairs professionals whose actions and service contributed to the success of Army Public Affairs are eligible for induction – this includes all current/former Soldiers and Army Civilians serving the Army, Army National Guard or Army Reserve. Inductees will have proven performance of conspicuous, long-term service for or on behalf of Army Public Affairs. All inductees must have:
1. Minimum time in service
Nominees must have 10 years of service connected to Army Public Affairs. This requirement may be waived due to extenuating circumstances (e.g. death or medical retirement prior to attaining the minimum time-in-service).
2. APAA Board of Directors Approval
The awarding of the Ancient Order of Saint Gabriel requires approval by the Army Public Affairs Association Board of Directors. The Board of Directors may also waive requirements for the award.
3. Army Public Affairs Association membership
Since APAA membership is required to receive the award and to nominate an inductee, both nominator and nominee will require a nominal $35 one-year membership at the time of submission if not a member yet. Nominators wanting to nominate a candidate without their awareness until approved may join their nominee using their own email address for receipt of the submission receipt confirmation notice. Membership sign up for nominators and/or nominees, if needed, should be completed separately from award submission on the website under Join/Renew. There is also a $50 donation/fee to the association for each nomination, payable online as part of the nomination submission process itself.
SUBMIT A NOMINATION
APAA Board of Directors approval is required; please submit nominations at least 60 days before the desired presentation date.
The Ancient Order of Saint Gabriel includes a certificate, and the medallion, ribbon and box. The certificate will be signed by the president of the association and the Director of the Army Communications and Outreach Office. Awardees will also be added to the distinguished roster of recipients.
THE MEDALLION
The Ancient Order of Saint Gabriel medallion bears the image of Gabriel, calling out the good news with his familiar trumpet, on the obverse of the brushed-gold medallion.
On the reverse is the Army Public Affairs emblem with its sword, pen and lightning bolt signifying the diverse roles of the Army Public Affairs communicator.
