APAA Announces Selection for the 2025 Donald Nathan Carr Memorial Scholarship

Army Public Affairs Association | Published on 8/21/2025

The Army Public Affairs Association is pleased to announce the recipient of the Donald Nathan Carr Memorial Scholarship for Public Affairs Excellence for the Class of 2025.

Capt. Alexandra Curtis, Commander of the 88th Army Band, Rhode Island National Guard, will receive $500 toward her public affairs/visual information professional education and academic study to advance her career in service to Army Public Affairs, the Army and the nation.

Curtis will use the scholarship to pursue her Ph.D. in Communications at the University of North Dakota. Her field of study will seek to support further research in media literacy and its critical role in countering information disorder in the information environment.

“This is an extraordinary honor, and I am so thankful for APAA's support in my continued pursuits of education in public affairs, especially as I aim to shape research around media literacy,” Curtis said. “Additionally, it's an honor to represent the 88th Army Band and support Rhode Island National Guard public affairs - our public affairs team strives for excellence in all we do and this award continues to help me play a role in shaping how we deliver in public affairs!"

The scholarship is named to honor retired Master Sgt. Don Carr, who retired from a lifetime of official service to America after more than 42 years combined service as an Army Public Affairs leader – an Army master sergeant and Department of the Army civilian who capped his career as Director of Public Affairs at Fort Belvoir, Va. Carr was the recipient of the association’s Joe Galloway Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 and was inducted into the Army  Public Affairs Hall of Fame that same year.

“We are so delighted to select Capt. Curtis for a Carr Scholarship this year,” said Rebecca Wriggle, president of the Army Public Affairs Association. “She has already demonstrated she’s a rock star in our profession, and this path will take her contribution to the next level. Every one of us will benefit from her research and her contributions because of it in the future. Congratulations to Allie, and we wish her the very best as she pursues her academic dreams.”

The Carr Scholarship program is made possible for the association by its founding sponsor, DCG Communications of Washington, DC. (https://dcgcommunications.com/). The association again thanks DCG for its support this year.

Up to five $500 scholarships are available each year.

Individuals can also contribute to making this scholarship program grow. Anyone interested in making a donation to the Donald Nathan Carr Scholarship for Public Affairs Excellence may do so in any amount through the website at the Donations tab. Each $500 in collected donations will add a scholarship to the program. Membership is not required. The APAA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
